A KLA second grader will continue to value reading and writing as tools for sharing theories, thoughts, and ideas. We will emphasize fluent reading (reading without stopping to figure out words) at each child’s stage, and your child will become a better writer as s/he writes basic sentences and short narratives.
At the same time, mathematical concepts become more complex in second grade. In addition to counting, reading, writing, and ordering sequential numbers up to 1,000, second graders will solve multi-step addition and subtraction word problems, and gear up to learn simple multiplication, which will be an important third grade skill.
They will use what they know to make predictions and find patterns in the natural world. They will continue expanding their knowledge about Earth and its natural resources, and how people use these resources to get energy. And they will be given more responsibility to resolve conflicts with their classmates, expand their competency in a foreign language, and develop their understanding of pitch, melody, and rhythm by singing, playing instruments, and exploring creative movement. In addition, our second graders start to like ideas that have an emotional appeal and encourage their imagination. As a result, our Atelier, along with other spaces within our environment, invite children to invent, create and explore the free expression of their ideas.
